Benefits of the Olascoaga Method

The Olascoaga method is a structure for teaching minor games in sport for physical education students. Based on european handball, the Olascoaga method places an emphasis on learning game strategies such as attacking, defending and intercepting the ball as well as transition and possession through a series of minor games. The method provides students with an opportunity to learn about the different roles within a game.

Generally speaking in most ball games you have defenders, mid-fields and forwards. By teaching students how to play these zones on a smaller scale they will further their understanding of how to effectively move the ball around the court. When students play the game in smaller zones, the fitness component is reduced, giving the students the opportunity to focus their concentration on the key skills required for the game.

Playing the game with more than one ball will engage more students in the game as well as teach students how to turn and anticipate the ball. it is extremely important to rotate the students through the three playing zones; defence, mid-field and forward, as this will give them the chance to experience different roles and encourage them to be more active. When playing the game with several balls at once it also develops the student’s ability to look at the goal and the position of the goalie, helping students identify the right time to move the ball into a position where they can attempt to score.

When students become comfortable playing in the various zones, the next step is introducing some basic defending and attacking strategies. Things like guarding a player from the front, side and from behind, or knowing when, where and what type of pass to use to another player. Gradually introducing such strategies into minor games elevates them into full games in disguise, and before student’s even realise it they are playing a full sports game with full sports game concepts!

When introducing the full game rules it is beneficial to have other students referee the game. This scenario puts students in the driver seat and provides them with an opportunity to make decisions and mistakes, which are a crucial part of learning. The idea is to develop within the students the ability to decide how the game will play out.

The Olascoaga method is a structure for breaking down sport games into minor games, and then building them back up into full sport games.
